Time and again you go back to the right wing nonsense well. Recent studies from Stanford and Columbia, that I posted a million times and you don't seem to be able to incorporate into your thinking, show that by the time rich kids are two, poor kids are operating intellectually at 18 months. By the time they are five, poor kids are operating at three years of age.

They went back to find the variable and it was the amount of words spoken in the house. Now how is it that you can't seem to understand that the amount of words spoken in the house is the SAME thing as early childhood education?

If the parents are uneducated they probably won't be talking about sophisticated ideas in the home , but they would be spoken in a preschool.

That is early childhood education, the amount of words spoken in the house. And kids who didn't get it were retarded by two years against rich kids by the time they were five.

What chance do those kids have when they enter kindergarten when they are two years behind the rich kids and academic kids where over 1 million more words were spoken and don't attend pre school.

Then add to that the fact that the rich kids and the academic kids usually go to preschool. My older daughter and her husband don't have a lot of money although he's a physics professor at a Northwestern University and my daughter is a lawyer, and our entire clan has post graduate education, still we pooled our money and sent them to preschool.

We educate the kids at home and we send them to preschool because we know how important preschool and public education is. Our entire clan is involved in a full-court press to get those kids educated. What chance do you think the poor kids that don't do anything until the're in kindergarten have against my grandkids who have every advantage in the world? It is on societies best interest to make sure the poor kids have the same advantage.

Not much of a chance. When both my daughters entered kindergarten they were light years ahead of the other kids and where's they flourished, many those kids failed.

School was a negative experience for them because they could were too far behind and could not keep up. And I knew several of them and I knew that their parents did not emphasize education at home and did not put them in preschool.

I'm not sure what myth you are talking about. For my part, I never suggested kids lose information gained early in life as a point in your topic. What I did say was "Statistics show that in the long term that boost is lost." That is, the gap in achievement levels returns. This is born out by scientific studies. The only way to keep that from happening is to continue intensive special instruction for several years after Headstart.

Fuerst's study adds considerable weight to a growing sentiment among early-childhood educators that inner-city kids need much more than a year or two of preschool. "The best program in the world for a very short time at age 4 is not going to help children survive the onslaught" of neighborhoods devastated by crime and drugs, says Barbara Willer, public-affairs director of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. "If you view it as an inoculation, you're in for a surprise."

But Fuerst says that when he studied the numbers more closely, he found some hope. At one of the six centers, children received an extraordinary amount of special instruction: seven to nine years.
