Religious "truths" are held based on faith, which is belief despite contrary evidence. Scientific "facts" are beliefs held based on supportive evidence. Religious "truths" never change, which religious people claim is a great attribute of them, and they denigrate science, because the "facts" do change over time based on evidence and new theories. There should be no confusion between the two modes of thinking.

And no, the fringe as you call it is not "fringe" in the USA. About 45% of Americans hold the belief that humans were created essentially in their present form by God cr 10Kya or so. Those 45% are solidly Republican voters, so they are in fact the majority of Republicans. I'll agree we might call them nutcases, but they aren't low in numbers.
