The environment is one arena where population is obviously a factor. Once upon a time the issue was focused on feeding everyone but that was mitigated by advances in food production to the point where one had a point of rebuttal and it lost steam. It's also a factor in the current culture divergence. For example, one wonders how someone who is supposed to value personal responsibility vs welfare and whose financial prospects are iffy could reasonably opt to produce who, in turn, will grow up in a failing locale and likely have even iffier prospects. And one wonders why we not only incentivize them to do it but seek to make it ever harder to avoid.
