Hi lorne. I am anything but an expert in Asian affairs so I can only speculate. I have read similar stories relating to Korea so I suppose it is possible. My own feeling is that the rising U.S.$ only exacerbates the Asian problems and if major defaults are to be prevented then this has to be addressed. Greenspan has his work cut out for him. I agree with much of what is said on the Skeptical Investor link that I post here often regarding Asia. Ron W., who posted above, has experience in this area as I believe he lived/worked there for a few years a while back. Maybe he can give you a more concrete answer.

Regards
