I have no problem with basic research.

I do have a problem with forking over $100 Billion in reparations to foreign countries for our generation of carbon (which is what happened in Paris). I do have a problem with government bureaucrats picking winners and losers (like Solyndra and far worse).

There are times when government intervention is necessary to protect the public interests. To be effective those times must be short and sweet. Long-term intervention almost always becomes a disaster (look at the food programs of the 30s, and, of course, health care, our biggest disaster).

We should always attempt to find private enterprise solutions to problems before committing to have government get involved.
