Yep, he did. Why did he blow it? Because of the various QEs the Fed instituted. Keeping the interest rate at or near zero helped also. The cratering of oil prices almost overcame those moves, though.

Now why did the Fed institute those measures? To keep the US from slipping into a deflationary spiral which Krugman and others were certain was happening.

Given that there were those who were predicting those measures would cause galloping inflation, and they had a point if the economy were otherwise healthy, I'd say Krugman et al were spot on and that if we hadn't of done those things our economy would have dumped, just like Japan's did.

But, whatever.
