Could they theoretically get
agreement of such a deal with ASND, say right now in Jan, 98, and have it be effective in
October, thereby obtaining the "pooling of interest" tax benefits?

I believe they can but I have not verified that. There was someone posting that is a good accountant regarding that issue. I wish I could recall his name.

A really old link about LU getting into data networking.

Here's a very old article (March, 97) from the NYT entitled "Lucent to Enter the Field of Data Networking". I just thought it was interesting to reread the mindset on LU's plan's back then. It's amazing how little seems to have changed -- except that they can't lust after Cascade as a separate entity w/o Ascend.
