Of course a principled populist could be even worse then an unprincipled one, depending on the principles they are pushing.

I would prefer a principled populist regardless of the principles. At least it would be orderly and you would know what you're dealing with. You would know if and why you agreed or disagreed. If you opposed the principles, you could counter both on principle and ad hoc.
