Well, the actual figure I think is closer to 30 Billion. But it hasn't always been that.

I would really avoid any "information" coming from sources such as "Slate", though. If you really want the truth you have to look at established sources who have been willing to be honest, not those for whom it is religion (complete with "do as I say, not as I do!")

There are a lot of factors at work, but just keep in mind that in the worst-case scenario these rates only reach back a few decades. Before that it just really wasn't an issue at all. As a result, the a trillion is probably high, but trillion(s) certainly would be.

I'll agree that it is easier just to go along with what the far left is saying. But if you actually look at the science you just can't get there from here. It is really worth studying, IMO. An interesting lesson in how science becomes politics.
