In neither case (at least for me and I think I'm far from alone in this), did "I want him to fail" mean I want the country to fail.

One of the big problems we have is that we don't go back and evaluate our programs by any criteria so we don't really know if they work. We know what each side thinks of them but that's not the same as knowing if they work.

The right has been pushing some ideas for a long time that may or may not be good ones. It would be useful if they would implement some of them so we could see if they are on the right track or full of it. Now is the opportunity to do that. I would almost look forward to it if I thought we'd get some definitive results and their ideas would be proven right or wrong. But that wouldn't likely happen. We'd still have two sides evaluating them subjectively and differently. If they could fail definitively or succeed definitively, I would favor the risk letting them do their thing. If I could be sure that Trump wouldn't blow anything up irreparably, I'd be ok with letting them have their head.
