Speaking of businesses with some degree of Ponziness :)

I looked at one yesterday, DNG.TO. They own properties in Peru, which is about all I need to say for most on this thread. If you are interested there is a good thread over on COBAF summing up the pros and cons:

cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca

I won't be investing. And pretty much all the other miners I find uninteresting, primarily due to the economic realities of their industry.

ABX. I'm a buyer for a few shares of this gold producer. I like that new management has come in and is reducing long-term debt with a view to eliminating it. Company is selling off "non core" assets to do this.
ABX producing costs and all-in costs seem to be relatively low (so I read); otoh, gold prices keep falling and if interest rates rise, production costs increase (I presume), and those higher interest rates become more attractive for savers over holding gold/gold stocks (I also presume). If there's international turmoil as a result of the new US president and his administration's policies, gold could quickly come back in favor (maybe) and gold stocks could surge (possibly - or not).

FWIW, I like miners a lot. I like gold/silver a lot right now and have for a while. It's probably better to discuss commodities on another board, but I think there are quite a few bullish scenarios for gold/silver.

I like PAAS and GG. PAAS is the second largest silver miner out there and has more current assets than liabilities so as silver goes up they will have better ability to generate high free cash flow. They also have great management. GG is one of the senior gold miners and has good management as well. Before gold started moving higher, GG started reasonable plans to reduce debt and increase operational efficiency. I also like EXK and EGO, they are junior miners and more speculative plays on gold/silver.
