<<<< I'm not sure you understand what a VAT tax is, Steve. You do know it's on EVERYTHING, not just US imports. right?>>>>>

I get that. But we have no VAT tax. Sooooo, we pay the VAT tax in the foreign country and the business in that country selling to us pays no tax.

I have argued for a VAT tax in this country for many years on epicures thing over there. We should also remember that it was Bernie Sanders who brought this issue to the forefront. The Trade agreements were his big thing - which even pushed Hillary a little so she was against TTP eventually if I remember correctly. So, it is NOT a partisan issue - or shouldn't be. Yes the Trade agreement were designed to make things more fair - hah! They made it more fair for corporate America while screwing the working man. ..........160 Countries use a VAT tax - America doesn't. It would be a huge mistake for democrats to hitch their horse to the Trade agreements IMHO.

More on VAT tax;
How might imposing a VAT tax here be favorable to the working man? The America company now pays their tax as a corporate income tax. Foreign companies don't pay this tax as far as I know. Sooooooo, if the tax was shifted from a corporate income tax to a VAT tax that was applied to everyone. Wouldn't that mean that suddenly the price of the foreign good is not so cheap any more? ..........IF we make goods in this country instead of in India or China - our workers benefit. I want to benefit American workers! Isn't that a good thing? I'm not talking about trade wars or isolationism - just a subtle mind set change so we start taking care of our own.
