I believe Asia is in a period of transition. I know the dark side, but what I'm looking at is the new Asia and how well these new Asian intellectuals are putting together ideas about how people and society should function in a better world. Although the characters are make-believe, somebody still had to think of them and those are the people that I'm impressed with. The people that designed the personalities of their characters and write the sophisticated dialogue I keep hearing. 3000 years of Asian philosophy has produced some very sophisticated ideas. From: koan Read Replies (1) of 44464 Happy new year LC, I'm not explaining myself very well. What I'm saying are two primary things. One, what is a society supposed to achieve? I would argue the health and welfare of the children and the citizens. And the success of a society can be measured by the smiles of the children who must be kept safe and secure, well fed and sheltered. That has to be the primary goals of society. And we have to have a mental image of what that might look like. How would the people interact, what might be the norms and mores. How should the people live? What I'm seeing in over 100 dramas now, are very sophisticated cinema, with no misogyny, no racism, and a theme of a constant battle between the new ways and the old ways. For example, in the drama 'Secret Garden", it is about a very wealthy guy who falls in love with a poor stunt woman. Because she is such a righteous woman. Yes, they are all sort of campy and surrealistic and slapstick, but if you listen to the dialogues it is better than anything I see in hollywood. But I digress, his family totally forbids the marriage. In fact in order for him to marry her he has to give up everything he has. This battle goes on for about 20 hours, and the old folks never give an inch. and the director treats them harshly. Right up to the end they never give an inch. But the young people ignore them in the end. And this drama like "Descendents of the Sun, or Dr. Stranger, or Secret Affair", all have very strong women leads. In every movie I've seen so far the women are equals to the men and presented as very smart and powerful. In fact they take it a step further and very often bring in the LGBT community to whom they confide, we are progressive and we are happy for you. These are all liberal , movies. Can you imagine me watching a conservative moive-lol? At the same time, the culture presented is very intellectually sophisticated. I cut my teeth on my search for understanding and have studied for 50 years the thinking of the HL Mencken's, Alfred North Whitehead's, Bertrand Russell's, Einstein's and Mark Twain's and Will Roger's and Will Durant. I know how these people think, and I am saying if you listen to the dialogue carefully, you will see it as a sophisticated as any that the human species has put forth so far with regard to positive interpersonal relationships and how to structure a great society. I think you're looking at the state of the Asian nations and not looking at the leading edge. But that leading edge seems to have control of the cinema and I have not seen any cinema anywhere in the world that is more sophisticated, ethical, aesthetic and beautiful, and interesting with great stories. So whatever you're talking about in those countries, what I see is a group of people trying to raise their society to a higher standard. As far as your comment on the plastic surgery, you are right, they really go after beauty. But I think the way they do it is healthy. They emphasize eating organically, staying thin, exercising and generally living a healthy life. You never see any drugs or any smoking even. And their attention to education, hard work, cleanliness, organization, humor and beauty is wonderful to see. So whatever these movies are doing, I find that I am enjoying them greatly for one primary reason, the kind and polite and intelligent manner in which they treat each other. And how they go after the bad guys, or the primitive ways of the elders that are bigoted and misogynistic and racist. What I see is a tremendous battle taking place all over Asia btween the new and old. . The last one that I've been binge watching that has just delighted me because it is such a beautiful movie of people loving each other and being kind to each other, was actually made in Taiwan. And for all of Japan's nihilism, they can be as lighthearted and enlightened as the other Asian cinema I have seen. There does seem to be a constant thread that runs through all of them, a modern-day thread if one looks for it. And that thread of intelligent living doesn't have to take a back seat to anyone. Cheers
