Number one these are all ACTIVE, as in someone DOING something. All a nonsmoker is doing is breathing. Do you really think eating to obesity, drinking, sexual activity or iv drug use are equivalent activities to breathing? That's not very reasonable. Number two, most don't really affect you. Although I already made the point about sobriety checkpoints. It is the law, they can stop you. Even if you don't appear to be driving erratically. They stop EVERYONE. It is a limit on freedom for the PUBLIC HEALTH. You shot yourself in the foot with that one. I already said I was willing to pay the increased cost of health care for smokers because many other ACTIVE behaviors also incur greater than average social health costs. Try harder.

hmm. I don't know if this is true, but I have been told by someone in the medical field that smokers with less than life-threatening conditions are leaving the hospital earlier than non-smokers as a result of not being able to smoke in the hospital. And few use lounge rooms now. No one can share a smoke break with the neighbour down the hall and commiserate over their conditions, hospital food, etc.

Personally, I'd like to ban anyone with a communicable disease like the common cold, flu, etc., from entering an elevator, classroom or touching any doorknob an innocent member of the public (like my kids, for example) could possibly touch. Also no one should be allowed to touch their face if they have a cold; they should be forced to carry kleenex and a small environmentally correct personal incinerator to dispose of used tissues. But I'm a little bit manic...
