03-01-97 : Local Electronics Companies Ready for DVD Battle; Key Players Believed to Be Korean, Japanese Firms

Korean electronics makers are gearing up for the looming battle with their foreign rivals over the digital video disk (DVD) player, a new home electronics device which is highly likely to create a huge market. DVD players are expected to wipe out video cassette recorders (VCRs) and CD-ROM drives from homes in a few years, as they are much more versatile and offer clearer pictures and sound.

As such, competition for the sweepstakes among the world's major electronics companies will be more fierce than ever. The key players in the new round of global battle are likely to be Korean and Japanese firms. Such Japanese powerhouses as Toshiba and Matsushita made a head start in the second half of last year. The initial market response, however, was far from enthusiastic because there were few titles to run on them.

The development of titles was delayed by about three months because of issues concerning copyrights protection. Recently, the issues were resolved, allowing title developers to go ahead with their projects. Among Korean firms, the frontrunner is Samsung Electronics Co. which brought its first products to the market almost simultaneously with the two Japanese makers.

Samsung is moving to export its products to such big markets as China, the United States and Europe. It will ship 100,000 to 200,000 units to China this month and another 100,000 units to Europe next month. The company also plans to demonstrate its machines at major sales outlets in the United States.

For the domestic market, Samsung intends to create demand by supplying titles as well. It is working on development of some 100 titles for release within this year. Following Samsung, LG Electronics Inc. has recently brought its products to the market. In the U.S. market, LG is in a better position than Samsung as it can take advantage of its investment in Zenith Corp. The company intends to sell its machines under the Zenith brand name which enjoys a high recognition among American consumers.

In China, LG plans to market through department stores in major cities. In addition to Samung and LG, Daewoo Electronics and Haitai Electronics are also making efforts to develop the new devices. These Korean players will have to compete with a horde of strong Japanese makers. Besides Toshiba and Panasonic, such big- name companies as Pioneer, Victor and Sony are ready to jump into the race.
