I've replaced hard drives into two portables Windows machines via cloning and used EASUS to do backup free edition with no problems and this change gives you the biggest bang for the buck. One of my portables was a nice small old Sony, the hard drive was buried in the middle of the computer guts but I did find a nice YouTube video on how to do it. My other portable was a newer Sony with a hard drive immediately available very easy to replace. As far as I can see most portables have this easy to replace access these days. Go for it but I also might suggest you search on Google for YouTube videos related to your specific computer which allows you to preview the process and give you great comfort in trying it yourself. I've also replaced the boot hard drive in 2 desktops with also no issues using cloning.
