What a coincidence. I am a super taster and a "super smeller." I think the two go together. Additionally, the food texture is more important to me than the taste. So for example when I was in university, one of my favorite breakfasts that was guaranteed to wake me up was Cheetos and Coke. The explosion of textures and flavors in my mouth created so many sensations that I would suddenly be alert no matter how little sleep I had. I cannot even remember which year I had soda in last. And when I do (typically once every 3 years or so), it is no more than a cup and then doesn't happen again for a long time. So my eating habits have come a long way. But because of my terrible former eating habits, I can relate to those who grew up on bacon-egg-and-fried-hash for breakfast. And I am the good news for them because if I can change, so can they.
