I've done this several times for desktops.

What he should do with the old laptop hard-drive after the clone is put it in the retail box the SSD came in and store the old drive as a backup.

what did you do with the original HD?

Spare external. Makes a convenient backup drive for a laptop via USB. (slower)

This struck a chord with me and sent a USB to SATA adapter to Carolyn.

Main thing is that it will allow her to make a clone before opening her desktop computer.

Moving cables around inside a computer probably isn't for novices.

Sweet Ol may also consider an adapter. Better to keep it simple. :)
