My '08 Highlander is AWD and it is auto. I push the 'snow' button when it's obvious I need it. However, the AWD 'snow' feature disengages when you reach a certain speed, which if I remember correctly is 27 mph. Of course, if you are going faster than that then AWD isn't of much help if you start going off the road, or spinning like a top.

This auto does really well in the snow. Suburu's are likely the best... recently CU tested three -- Forester, CR-V, and RAV4, if I remember correctly. Suburu out handled the other two easily. Decades of experience there.
