Yousef - Re: "HP's $799 Pentium MMX 200 MHz PC"

Great find! What a story!

Intel has come from "Not in the Game" to "Leader of the Pack" in the sub $1000 PC "space" (I use the media lingo here!).

Well, times are going to get tougher for all CPU makers who can't produce CPUs at super high yields, high volumes and low cost.

I wonder if there is blip in Intel's depreciation schedule that will allow them to reduce the "cost" of these CPUs to just the silicon cost - that is, nearly depreciated fab equipment for these older 0.35 micron processes.

Any thoughts?

Paul

Yousef - MORE on the HP $799 Intel PC

There is more to this announcement - much more - check out this URL:

news.com

HP is introducing a $1099 Pentium II 233 MHz PC and a $1699 266 MHz Pentium II. And these are NOT STRIPPED DOWN MODELS!

"HP today introduced the
Pavilion 8240 with a 233-MHz MMX
Pentium, 32MB of memory, a 4.0 GB hard
disk drive, a 24X CD-ROM drive, and
56-kbps modem for $1,099. This also beats
similarly configured systems from Compaq
by a few hundred dollars.

HP's assault doesn't stop with Pentium
systems. The Pavilion 8260, priced at
$1,699, comes with a 266-MHz Pentium II,
CD-ROM drive, 512KB cache memory, a
4GB hard drive, and a 56-kbps modem. "

The sleeping giant has awoken.
