I don't think too many people believed Al Gore on that one...

I guess my analogy didn't register. I'll try something else.

I'm about as libertarian as you get but that doesn't mean that every opinion I have is pure libertarian. It will have been informed by my libertarianism but something else might override. As I said, there are few libertarians. Usually, people are something else with a wide or narrow libertarian streak. The closest thing we have in Congress to a libertarian is Rand Paul. He's also a traditionalist conservative. So, when he takes a position on something, you can't say that the position he takes is libertarian simply because it came from him. There are many conservative politicians that once flirted with libertarianism or have a libertarian bent in some area. They also have non-ideological considerations. It is seriously inapt to attribute everything they have ever said or done to libertarianism just because they had a brush with a libertarian spirit.

Libertarianism, at it's core is: don't hurt people or take their stuff. It is not about:

smoking doesn't cause cancer, guns don't contribute to violence, humans burning fossil fuels aren't causing the climate to warm up, socialized medicine can't work, the earth is only 6K y/o and evolution is a hoax ready to collapse due to the huge weight of evidence against, etc, etc.
I don't believe any of those things.
