Astonishing Tim, a post of yours I pretty much agree with.

However, along with this:

I do wonder if the election results were the opposite, if Trump won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote, how many people who are now attacking the EC would be supporting it, and how many people now supporting it would be attacking it. I imagine quite a few.

we can add one prominent individual: Trump himself. When it looked like he might be losing, he was tweeting against the EC.

Also while an electoral college might provide some defense for diverse ideas not being overrun by ideas concentrated in population centers a better defense is federalism.

Too bad federalism has been eroding away so much for generations. When it has been eroded it is at times for a very good reason, with the lower level government behaving rather atrociously, still I'd prefer not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
