U.S. Mint Features African-American As Lady Liberty On New Gold Coin

Lady Liberty has a new look on the U.S. Mint's latest gold coin as it celebrates its 225th anniversary.

Thursday, the U.S. Mint revealed that its new one-ounce commemorative gold bullion coin features Lady Liberty as an African American woman wearing a crown of stars. The coin has a face value of $100 but one coin is worth $1,194 an ounce as future prices hold near their highest levels in seven weeks.

According to the U.S. Mint, this is only the start of its new diverse look as it plans to portray Lady Liberty in other minority images.

"The 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin is the first in a series of 24-karat gold coins that will feature designs which depict an allegorical Liberty in a variety of contemporary forms-including designs representing Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Indian-Americans among others-to reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States," the mint said in a press release.

The Lady Liberty's updated look was created by Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer Justin Kunz and sculpted by Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.

Along with the new commemorative gold coin, the mint will also release a silver bullion version.

Demand for gold and silver bullion coins has started the year on a strong note. The U.S. Mint started selling its 2017 gold and silver coins Monday and saw increased first-day sales compared to 2016.

According to the sales data, 68,000 ounces of gold in various denominations of American Eagle gold bullion coins were sold on the first day, an increase of 15% compared to first-day sales in 2016.

At the same time the mint sold more than 3.7 million one-ounce silver coins Monday, an increase of 35%, compared to first-day sales last year.
