You are correct in stating that a self-employed person would pay 12.4% on the additional increment, while someone working for an employer would pay 6.2% on it.

I'll amend how I characterized the effective cost:

That's about a latte per day if you're working for someone else, or a latte and a mocha per day if you're self-employed.

Hopefully taking care of your parents is worth that much.
