The kids can support themselves and their parents if their isn't too many parents for each kid. It gets harder and harder to do so as the amount of kids per parent drops (that true whether your doing it old school with the children directly paying for their own parents, or whether your talking about some form of taxation for state pensions).

The issue with more old people per worker is not just an issue with the baby boomers retiring now, its also a longer term issue with people living longer and the SS retirement age barely budging (and Medicare age not changing)

That's the way it worked for me. It's good for the kids and the parents. It's for everyone, because everyone gets old.
