(NASDAQ:GART). Dataquest hasn't completed final results for the industry, but the most recent estimate is the worldwide semiconductor market will reach $150 billion for 1997. Intel remained the market leader in 1997, with semiconductor revenue surpassing $21 billion (see Table 1). "Led by microprocessors, Intel grew its semiconductor revenue by nearly 20 percent during the year, which is strong performance in face of major inventory adjustments by PC OEMs," said Ron Bohn, director for Dataquest's Worldwide Semiconductor Research Operations. "The weakening of currencies like the Korean won and Japanese yen against the U.S. dollar, however, exacerbated low memory IC pricing. This meant another year of revenue decline or no growth for a host of memory-dependent companies as measured in dollars."
