The money we save earns interest (at least it used to).

Yes and no. More no than yes.

It doesn't earn any interest for us.

The money we save earns interest. Stick it in the bank and it grows, albeit slowly these days. And that money is and remains ours. Indisputably.

Having to pay SS tax does make it harder to find money to save. Nonetheless, the process of saving and earning interest is independent of SS.

[I was fortunate that the timing of my parents' retirement hit that sweet spot when interest rates were double digit. They were able to earn enough on their savings that, along with SS, they supported themselves in retirement and were even able to leave me a little something rather than my needing to support them. That was a fluke. ]
