Yiwu Zhang, the Taiwan market gained 18% in 1997 (local currency) and broke even in U.S. dollars (-0.29%), according to the Jan. 1, 1998 New York Times. The Korea composite lost 42.21% in local currency and 69.63% in U.S. dollars (same source). I think investors in Taiwan may well consider that they escaped a worse fate, though they would have done much better in the U.S. or Europe. -- Shoe
