I well remember all the small businesses that were lost to the big box stores. In fact, more has probably been lost right here where I live in NW Arkansas because Wal-Mart test markets all its different store configurations, thus there's some kind of Wal-Mart on almost every corner. Actually, I'm seeing changes happen here that I really like. My old, achy feet are tired of clomping through those cavernous stores, so I'm delighted to now have a thriving hardware store, an old-fashioned butcher shop with a seafood counter, a nice assortment of locally owned restaurants, a toy store that is expanding, and a locally owned shop for babies and todlers that stocks cribs and baby furniture made in America. This may not sound like much, but my town, though affluent, is less than 100,000 in population. These businesses have come in the last six years. Hopefully, it's happening where you live, because we've all been captive to the model of big box stores buying bulk merchandise made overseas and competing purely on price. but America will only come around by following other Countries as they learn to deal with the new reality, it won't be America leading anymore.
I disagree with this. I don't want us following any other country. Who would we follow anyway? Which country? American is still the alpha consumer and rule in technology. In fact, I'm hopeful that the Trump team will stop the transfer of technology so many of our companies make when they manufacture in China.Copyright © 1995-2017 Knight Sac Media. All rights reserved.
