Interesting conjecture but I give it 0% of happening. I think Compaq has pushed Intel about as far as they dare. As I've stated previously, I think companies like Compaq and IBM will support AMD to the extent they remain a viable player. But Intel is too dominant for any top-tier company to even consider an alliance like that. Let's face it, Intel PC's still represents most of Compaqs' PC revenues. If AMD can ship everything they can make in `98 it's still probably less than 15% market share. Look at AMD as the stick! I think Compaq is just using AMD as a tool.
I think what they have accomplished is the price concessions required to penetrate the huge untapped market in home PC's using Intel chips.
