Yes, I should have said the 'private economy'. I'm probably OK with reducing the size of the federal government. Years ago I tried to help a woman in the early stages of ALS find out what kind of HUD housing she might eventually quality for in Denver, CO. I ordered a HUD manual for that county, expecting to get something along the lines of a pamphlet. What I got was more like a small phonebook. There must have been 150 different HUD programs and very little guidance as to which programs existed to serve which segment of the population. Fortunately, there are attorneys in Denver who specialize in HUD housing, and she was taken care of by one of them. Of course, it cost her family a few thousand dollars. The shock of that discovery has never left me. If federal employees are well-educated and have skills, they should be fine in the private economy. We shouldn't let either state or federal government become the employer of last resort.
