I am well aware that war strips away human ethics, but I would still "hope" that after the war that ethics would return to most "veterans".

Agreed and it mostly does, at least per my longer term experience. But the memories never go away and can remain quite painful, along with a relative pleasure of having survived when others didn't. War and ethics is far from a simple subject, and I've remained quite anti-war since the '60s but with exceptions for things like war preemptively being declared on the US.
