In a cold climate one simply adds or removes clothing layers as the temperature fluctuates. We have light bulbs, insulated buildings with heating systems, AWD vehicles, coffee shops, hand warmers, ice grippers, fat tire bikes, ski trails, skating rinks, ice and snow sculpture, sled dog races, etc.

The maintenance crews spread vast amounts of grit on the roads in winter. When May comes there's a race to sweep it all up and repaint the street markings before tourist season starts. Studded tires are legal, but they carve deep ruts in the asphalt so the main roads need repaving every 5-6 years.

In places with extreme winter cold (e.g. Fairbanks) the parking lots have electric outlets so folks can plug in their engine block heaters while at work.
