2020 isn't too far away. While my guess is just a Little Ice Age, it could well be a cusp to full scale reglaciation. It's a mistake to think such things happen in thousands of years or even centuries. When nature flips, it's often a quick move, highly detrimental to those involved. Watch a Malthusian collapse for example and it's very quick - starvation is a quick process. A population boom such as people have had too a couple of thousand years. A collapse to a few hundred million could be fast.

Imagine food shipments to Alaska being stopped for 6 months over winter for example. Many people would find that weight loss is not as impossible as they think.
