But this is not about them going back to Iran. Now they can't even go to Canada or take vacation in Mexico. If they leave, they can't come back in.

Here are a couple cases that I saw in the news just today - one is a post doc prof educated in Switzerland who got a teaching position in Harvard. She got pulled out of the airplane on her way to US. She's now without a home or job since she quit all that to come to US.

Another was the Yale prof's wife that I told you about.

Another is an anthropology PhD student who is stuck in Dubai and he can't go back to Iran because he's been anti-government but now he can't come back to US and to make it worse, his visa in Dubai is running out.

This was a very amateurish policy...try as you might, you can't justify its implementation, even if you agree with its premise....which as I pointed out is not founded in logic.
