Agree with you on many things. I'm not against government - I'm against BIG government. If you haven't read the "Flight 93" essay by Publius Decius Mus, I'd suggest checking it out. He nailed it. The "Deep State" IS the government. Elections merely determine which set of politicians will get to supervise the deep state establishment - up until the next elections. You mentioned Stalin. From what I read, on a personal level he wasn't a sadistic or heartless man - he genuinely grieved after he had some of his old friends killed (sarc). Periodically, he would do his own version of "draining the swamp" - he would kill off the established leadership, which was no longer able to participate in his process of "accelerated history". He would also have arrested and often killed many of the mid- and lower level apparatchiks. The survivors were so terrified that he had no difficulties having them follow his "executive orders".
