Carolyn's computer froze before starting the Acronis Bootloader and it was stuck there with the external drive plugged in for a long time, but I just ran this test.

Immediately after shutting Windows down, I removed the external SSD and after the Acronis Bootloader was installed, I got this message.

Acronis Bootable Agent is waiting for removable devices

One or more of your removable disks may not have started at the moment. Click 'Yes' to wait for a full startup of the devices (recommended). Click 'No' to ignore uninitialized devices and continue. Click 'Cancel' to stop the current operation. Do you want to wait for the devices startup?

(Yes)---(No)---(Cancel)

What I had wondered was whether Acronis would abort with the SSD missing, but the good news is that it's definitely a feature to plug in an external drive after Acronis loads!

I clicked Yes and plugged the SSD in and Acronis started the clone after about 10 seconds.

I've also successfully booted the new drive to verify that the clone was indeed good. :)

This is Acronis True Image WD Edition (version 32) but version 33 is now available.
