Comline Telecommunications Wire via Individual Inc. -- Hitachi Information Technology has developed a server that can be used to configure an Internet phone network with an ordinary telephone. The server can contribute to reduced communication costs, such as international and long-distance expenses, compared with calls routed through regular telephone companies. Users merely input the server number, then the destination number. Voice quality was a concern, but Hitachi IT has fitted the server with a special chip to improve voice transmission. The company will offer the Internet Telephony Server (ITS)/Phone A8, at 2.5 million yen, and the ITS/Phone A16, at 3.5 million yen. Installation support services will require an extra 180,000 yen. The company will target companies and providers aiming to strengthen services amid heightened competition. Annual sales are expected to reach the 300-unit level.
