You had to fight him or he would've kept bullying you....I had a fight at Columbia University when I was a graduate student with a redneck from Texas who was a Reaganite. It was 1981 and I represented the Graduate Student Council for the Department of Philosophy and we met once a month to discuss social activities. I was receiving 3 free graduate student credits for this, worth about $660 at the time. But the catch was this: I couldn't be absent 3 times without a Doctor's excuse or I forfeited the money. The third time I was absent I brought in a letter from a Doctor saying I had strep throat. When I gave the note to Webster, along with a few other girls who brought in their Doctor notes, he said, "I am going to accept your excuses darlings, but you Rarebird, you are not All-American enough." This guy was from Texas, 6'6", 300 pounds and I am 5'9" 150 pounds. I say to this guy, "if I lose my free 3 credits or $660, I am going to F you up" and I left. A couple of days later I got the notice in the mail from this dude that I lost the credits. He was the Secretary of the Graduate Student Council. I set out the word to all his friends, that I was going to challenge him to an old-fashioned fist fight at the next meeting. When I attended the next meeting, I confronted the dude, asked him to step outside and told him I challenge him to an old fashioned fist fight. He left immediately with his friends and I left with mine. Old-Fashioned fist fight means "last man standing". That fight lasted less than one minute. Webster (the dude) took a shot with his right hand, which I easily blocked with my right hand. But he left his whole face open. I threw a punch at his left cheekbone and he went down immediately, bleeding profusely. Call it a TKO if you like. The fight was over. My wife, my mother, my father and brothers all approved of this fight. They all agreed he deserved to be F up. Problem was Webster filed a claim (not in a court of law), at Colombia University and there was a hearing. At the first hearing. we both presented our cases and called witnesses. I was found guilty and had to pay a $50 fine. So, I figured big deal. At the appeal, I found out the trial was going to be fixed because Webster's father was a big donor to the school and threatened to pull out if justice wasn't served. I knew I was screwed. At the appeal, I was guilty, ordered to pay half of Webster's medical expenses and was suspended for 6 months. I forgot to say Webster had to undergo 3 eye operations and got over 500 stitches as a result of my punch. It was quite a sight to see him at the hearings. My family ended up hiring a big lawyer who was friends with the dean of the school and the suspension was dropped, but I had to pay for all his medical expenses. The lawyer told me "that it didn't make a difference that he consented to the fight and that he could have F me up too. What I did was wrong. Fighting is only used for self-defense. This is not the Wild Wild West," my lawyer said. "You were guilty. " Guilty or not, Webster got what he deserved and I have no regrets. When he looks at his face, he will always think of me. I don't have the slightest regret over that. I have a very hardcore side so I understand.
