I'm an engineer/scientist. Causal relationships make things happen. The world is a deterministic place, despite quantum physics and so-called free will. So let's have a look at so-called Russian expansionism. Throughout history, humans have been expansionist because Malthusian force made them be so. Those who were not expansionist were eliminated from the gene pool because the neighbouring tribe of breeders would conquer them and conduct genocide on the males who were conquered, with females and property being the spoils of war. There were no Geneva Conventions or simple changing of ruler. It was generally carnage. While Russia had a burgeoning and technologically advancing population they could be expansionist, using their ideology to help in the process of conquest by subverting the feudal populations they would conquer, just as the Moslem conquest did from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific ocean. Europeans in general did that around the world - hence the north and south American countries came into existence in place of the stone age tribes who previously owned the continents. Europeans had burgeoning numbers with no room for them at home, and booming industrial revolutions, science, technology, capitalism, laws and civilisation in general. Russia's expansionism was on their borders because they were not a sea-going realm. They had communist collectivism as an ideology which appealed to large proportion of people around the world and it still does - Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton did very well. Now, Russia has a small economy about the size of Italy with a low GDP per person. They don't have an exportable ideology and they have a stable to falling population which is also aging - old people are not expansionist. Only 150 million aging people. For comparison, China is 1.3 billion with real money and lots of spare young males. USA 330 million with high GDP. On the contrary for 30 years, Russia has been shrinking. When Gorby took over they had passed their peak and his glasnost and perestroika were attempts to keep things functioning internally, never mind fomenting distant wars and expansion. He was unable to keep the eastern Europeans as part of the USSR system. USSR shrank down to Russia only. Even with only Russia, Putin isn't having an easy time of keeping it stable, let alone expanding. All he's trying to do is hold the line which he did in Georgia and has done in Crimea and is disputing NATO conquest of Ukraine. Unfortunately, the loons in the USA who like Zbig and Kissinger who are stuck back in Stalin's time and useful idiots like Obama, vicious Harpies like Hillary and her coven, girly men like John Kerry and Dr Strangelove types in the MAD military intelligence [sic] circles and the mobs who get their opinions ready-made from their opinion leaders, think that Russia is still in 19th century expansionary mode and must be stopped. Backing Assad against ISIS was a good thing to do, not Russian expansionism. Big Don has recognized that truth and seems to have managed to switch swarms of Americans to seeing that Obama's "Assad Must Go" was a stupid idea all along. Not only is there no Russian expansionism, there is an imminent collapse in the east with Made in China conquest a certainty if the stupid MAD Pentagonians get their way and get a dinkum war with Russia. China has 1.3 billion youngish people with 20 million spare young males of fairly low value and pretty good GDP along with technology and expansionist activities around the world. Africa is being taken over by China for example, and economic takeover from Afghanistan out into the Pacific ocean. Russia is the front line of the European realm against the descendants of Genghis Khan who previously took over all of Asia. Russia should be backed, not attacked. Russia will be lucky to hold onto Siberia, even with the so-called "free" world on their side. If NATO/USA continues to attack, Russia will be taken over by China, or at least a big part of it, such as east of the Urals. Don't worry at all about Russian expansionism which doesn't exist. The threat to worry about is Islamic jihad which is a geopolitical ideological insurrection against the so-called "free" world. The victory process of jihad is to swamp everywhere with Moslem Trojan horses. Their ideology is conquest. Their Malthusian hordes provide the ammunition. They have the oil revenues to fund a lot of it. It's a stealth invasion. There's also the African threat which is a Malthusian onslaught without the ideology and without an over-arching political system. The African invasions are just individuals taking their chances. Jihad is the same but with Moslem ideology propulsion. Russia is a threat from the 19th and 20th century, not the 21st century. The biggest political threat these days is Turnkey Tyranny of the state against the individual. It's pretty much a done deal. Mqurice
