Nope. I meant exactly what I said.

Progress: a forward or onward movement (note the positive meaning)

Process: a series of actions or operations conducing to an end (note the lack of a positive spin).

The Cardinals didn't make it to the playoffs (surprise!), so what is happening is a bunch of activity which will sooner or later end at the Super Bowl. Process is the proper term.

However, if the Cardinals had succeeded in winning a few more of their games (only 7 more would have done it), then they'd be in the playoffs and progressing towards their ultimate victory.

From the looks of things, I won't have to worry about any progress being made in this area for several years.
