They'd have done what they DID do ... they left. You keep insisting the authorities can and will protect everyone from everything, but that just isn't reality. You don't have to put quotes around constables. The city of Houston has a police force. In unincorprated areas, the county sheriff's department patrols. In addition, there are constable precincts that hire officers and patrol in neighborhoods that pay them to. These officers were constables.
