Yes a lot of such analysis is guesswork and speculation. Sure there was some evidence of loose discussions of annexation if the Yanukovych regime fell.

But the article did give specific examples of political confusion that makes it clear the Russians were winging it after the surprise Maidan uprising. Pre-planned or not, hard to fault Putin for his reaction - the EU and the West would have been unrealistic to expect Ukraine to keep the predominantly Russian Crimea and the important Naval base. Especially if Putin is convinced they were behind the coup.
