Betty,
We both know that some computer companies can thrive while dropping prices. Because technology is moving forward. Unfortunately ths is not taught at the schools the Analysts attend....so they freak when a company like Compaq and Intel drop prices. They just don't get it...so buy their dips.
Analysts grieve over the following...
Asian flu slowing demand....
The whole tech sector slowing down...this is a common mistake they have made....
Competition...
Price drops as a sign of competition...
What has gone up can't go up anymore and therefore must go down...
Jim

betty, cpq's low price pc's have a margin of 15-22%.
and then you add the monitor at 50%.
So,
if they make 15% on a 799 pc and 50% on 15" monitor
that is total of 24-25% on that sale.
their presaio line isn't a loss leader.
it's a cash machine that turns inventory 3 times faster than dell does. 100x vs. 36x
