I will try to answer. First thing I should tell you is that I used to live not far from the Berkeley campus, in Lafayette, just on the other side of the CaldecottTunnel. My father graduated from UCB with a degree in electrical engineering. I was born and raised in the Bay Area.

Question: Why does the word of one liberal person named Reich carry so much weight, especially after said on CNN? One silly opinion?

For a couple of reasons

The first being that he is the Chandellor's Professor of Pulblic Policy at UCB
Second, he was present the night of the riot an had this to say:

“I was there for part of last night, and I know what I saw and those people were not Berkeley students,” Reich said. “Those people were outside agitators. I have never seen them before.”

“There’s rumors that they actually were right-wingers. They were a part of a kind of group that was organized and ready to create the kind of tumult and danger you saw that forced the police to cancel the event,”

Personally, I don't think its a silly opinion, he doesn't have a reputation for making stuff up

Question: If the police stated that these were not students, why were thy allowed to riot with masks on instead of being arrested for burning and damaging property? How often do you see people demonstrating with masks and clubs?
I can answer this though I myself thought it peculiar that there were no arrest. At another recent protest when it turned to rioting and vandalism they caught the perps and were making a big deal of the fact that they were going to prosecute them and that they were facing up to 10 years on prison.

This article makes the event look particularly suspicious. Note this

"According to a promotional Breitbart story that ran before the event, Yiannopoulos was going to “ call for the withdrawal of federal grants and the prosecution of university officials who endanger their students with their policies.”

I suggest you read the entire article.

Here's a ZERO HEDGE article you might want to read
FBI Allegedly Investigating Mayor of Berkeley, CA For Inciting Riot And Ordering Police to Stand Down - CNN Doing Damage Control

There are several other articles you can read about the response of law enforcement.

Curious times indeed.
