I am not a great fan of flow batteries for many reasons

As to chemistries under development they are many and get more complex by the day

In R&D stages you configurations based on sodium, magnesium, calcium aluminium etc.,

As to carbon they introduce now carbonised and activated rayon/viscosa or outright activated carbon fibers in a mesh, or fullerenes, CNT or carbon ribbons or graphene

Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) also produces a variety of very porous carbon material with great van der Waals qualities

There is also a tendency to use also other materials instead of carbon
