Buy & Sell columnist Sonita Horvitch says in the Saturday edition of the
Financial Post that Mark Bonham, chairman and chief executive of
Toronto-based Strategic Value, cautions that there could be negative
returns from North American equity markets this year. He says the Canadian
small-cap sector, which has taken a beating, is offering some
opportunities. Among his current top stock picks are Internet Liquidators
International, currently $3.05 with a 52-week range of $5 to $0.72. The
company sells a variety of consumer goods to shoppers on the Internet and
conducts online auctions. Mr Bonham says it is a fast-growing company. His
12-month target price on the stock is $4.50. Overall, Mr Bonham's message
for investors looking into 1998 is to be defensive and look to protect
capital. He says that valuations are too high and not priced for the likely
slowdown in earnings. He says that current earnings expectations are way
too high. In selecting stocks, Mr Bonham targets companies that have
sustainable earnings.
