Nearly 170 biotech executives, investors, consultants and scientists signed on to a letter protesting President Donald Trump’s executive order banning U.S. entry by people from seven majority-Muslim countries.

The letter, published Tuesday on the journal Nature Biotechnology’s blog, described the policy as “misguided” and said it would have negative consequences for the biotech industry.

If the ban isn’t reversed, “America is at risk of losing its leadership position in one of its most important sectors, one that will shape the world in the 21st century,” the letter said. “Indeed, it will harm an industry dominated by smaller companies and startups, the very kind of industry the administration has said it wants to support.”

Tuesday’s letter marks the first real industry response to the travel ban.
