For all intents and purposes, Java is an international standard and Microsoft is going to have a very difficult time co-opting this one. Integration with Visual Cafe, JBuilder, Java Workshop, Visual Age and dozens of other Java tools is going to make that very difficult indeed. Moreover, Java class libraries are also part of the standard and that will turn Microsoft's dream of making Java technology their technology into a nightmare . Microsoft's two-pronged approach was to eliminate certain core facilities and deploy proprietary extensions within otherwise portable code. That's probably far more sophisticated than the actual plan; the actual plan probably went something like this: let's leave a bunch of stuff out and put in a bunch of proprietary stuff where they least expect it. In so doing, software written to the standard will not run on Windows whereas software written with Microsoft's tools will run on nothing but Windows. Microsoft doesn't give a damn about customer choice.
