No significant difference IMO. We spent most of 12 years in San Diego, which I believe is - or at least back then was - one of the best places in the US to live. Not downtown, but out in Point Loma. Same story with Sweden, never lived downtown but out in the burbs of Stockholm. My son lives in Lund, a very nice old university city fairly close to the bridge to Copenhagen. I see no difference in standard of living between the US and Sweden, at least not for well educated people with a good job.
